Your Child’s Pre-Op Checklist: How to Prepare for Surgery

Preparing your child for surgery can feel overwhelming — but having a clear checklist makes it easier for both you and your child. Here’s what to do before the operation to ensure everything goes smoothly.

✅ 1. Follow Fasting Instructions

You’ll receive specific guidelines on when your child should stop eating and drinking before surgery. These are critical to prevent complications during anesthesia. Always double-check the times.

✅ 2. Share Your Child’s Medical History

Let the surgical team know if your child:

  • Has any allergies
  • Is taking any medications (including over-the-counter or herbal remedies)
  • Has had previous surgeries or reactions to anesthesia

✅ 3. Ask Questions Early

Don’t wait until surgery day. Ask your child’s surgeon or anesthesiologist about:

  • The procedure itself
  • How long it will take
  • What kind of anesthesia will be used
  • How pain will be managed afterward

✅ 4. Prepare Your Child Emotionally

  • Use simple, age-appropriate words to explain what will happen.
  • Reassure them that you will be there.
  • Encourage them to ask questions or express feelings.
  • Bring a favorite toy or blanket on surgery day for comfort.

✅ 5. Pack Essentials

Bring these with you:

  • ID and insurance card
  • Any paperwork or consent forms
  • Medications (if instructed)
  • Snacks for after surgery (for you and possibly for your child)
  • Change of clothes

✅ 6. Follow Instructions for Medication

If your child is on regular medications, ask if they should be taken on the day of surgery. Some may need to be stopped temporarily.

✅ 7. Arrive on Time

Be sure to arrive at the hospital or surgical center at the scheduled check-in time — this allows enough time for preparation and any final assessments.
