After your child has surgery, proper wound care is one of the most important steps in ensuring a smooth recovery. Here’s what you need to know to take care of the incision site at home.
1. Follow the Discharge Instructions
Your surgical team will provide written instructions specific to your child’s operation. Always follow these first. If anything is unclear, don’t hesitate to call your surgeon’s office.
2. Keep the Wound Clean and Dry
In the first few days, avoid getting the wound wet unless you’ve been told otherwise. Sponge baths are often recommended until the dressing is removed or the wound has started healing.
3. Watch for Signs of Infection
Call your doctor if you notice:
- Redness spreading around the incision
- Swelling or increasing pain
- Pus or drainage
- Fever or chills
4. Changing Dressings
If dressings are used, change them as advised:
- Wash your hands before and after
- Use clean materials
- Avoid using creams or ointments unless prescribed
Some wounds may not need a dressing once they are dry and healing.
5. Prevent Your Child from Scratching or Picking
If your child is old enough, explain why it’s important not to touch the incision. For babies and toddlers, consider using mittens or distraction to prevent scratching.
6. Activity Restrictions
Limit rough play, swimming, or sports until your surgeon says it’s okay. Too much activity early on can reopen the wound or delay healing.
